Sarah Yorke Jackson was the daughter of Andrew Jackson's close friend and advisor, Samuel Yorke. She became the first daughter-in-law of a United States president to serve as a White House hostess when she married Andrew Jackson Jr. in 1831. Sarah was known for her graciousness and her ability to balance the demands of her husband's political career and her family life. She oversaw the decoration and redesign of the White House during her time as hostess and hosted numerous elegant social events. After her husband's death in 1861, Sarah retired from public life and lived out the rest of her years in the family home in Tennessee.
